Contractor Marketing in Metro Detroit and Across Michigan

I’m Jeff, and Campaigns That Convert is based in Plymouth, Michigan. I help plumbers, HVAC companies, roofers, and tree service companies get more calls from Google across Wayne, Oakland, and Washtenaw counties, and anywhere else in Michigan. Everything I do is remote-friendly, so a 15-minute call works the same whether your shop is down the road or in Grand Rapids. But Metro Detroit is home, and I know how many contractors are fighting for the same searches here.

Why Local Search Is Different in Metro Detroit

Metro Detroit isn’t one market. It’s dozens of cities and townships packed right next to each other. A homeowner in Livonia searching “water heater repair” might see companies from Westland, Farmington Hills, and Redford in the same map results. Google says local results depend largely on relevance, distance, and prominence, so where the searcher is matters a lot, and the three businesses on the map can change from one neighborhood to the next.

That means two things for your marketing:

  • Your Google Business Profile has to be strong enough to compete outside your own city, especially when you’re based in one city but want jobs in three others.
  • Your ads should target the cities you actually want work in, with your budget weighted toward the jobs and areas that pay best, instead of a big circle around your shop.

Cities I Focus On

Plymouth, Canton, and Northville

Plymouth is my home base. Plymouth, Canton, and Northville sit side by side on the western edge of Wayne County, and Northville crosses into Oakland County. Contractors here often want to reach into Novi, Livonia, and the townships to the west without spending on jobs too far away. I set ad targeting city by city and use heatmaps to show where your profile ranks across that whole stretch, not just at your shop address.

Livonia and Westland

Livonia and Westland are dense, close to each other, and close to a lot of competitors in neighboring cities. For a plumber or HVAC company here, the edge usually comes from reviews, response speed, and Local Services Ads, since a lot of competitors show up for the same searches. Missed-call text-back matters too. When there are many options a mile away, an unanswered call goes to someone else.

Novi

Novi is in Oakland County, and a lot of the competition comes from surrounding cities along the I-96 and M-5 corridors. For roofers and tree service companies in particular, I focus on service-specific pages and Google Ads targeting, so you show up for the specific jobs you want, like roof replacement or tree removal, and not just your company name.

Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor is the anchor of Washtenaw County, and plenty of contractors serve it from elsewhere. If you’re based outside Ann Arbor but want work there, you can’t fake an address, because Google’s Business Profile guidelines don’t allow virtual offices. What you can do is set your service area correctly, run ads targeted to Ann Arbor, and build up reviews from customers you’ve served there.

Dearborn

Dearborn sits between Detroit and the western suburbs, so local search there pulls in businesses from both directions. I’d look closely at which services bring in the most calls and build Google Ads around those, with call recording so you can hear what people are asking for.

Detroit

Detroit is a big city with many neighborhoods, and it’s a big area to cover from one map pin. Contractors serving Detroit usually do best by targeting neighborhoods and ZIP codes they really want to work in, setting clear job types in Local Services Ads, and making sure their profile shows the full service area. I’ll help you decide where your budget goes instead of spreading it across the whole city.

Serving the Rest of Michigan

Outside Metro Detroit, I work with trades businesses across Michigan. The approach is the same: find out where you want jobs, see where you rank today, then fix your profile, ads, and follow-up in the order that gets you booked work fastest. In smaller markets, fewer competitors often means a strong Business Profile and Local Services Ads can carry more of the load.

Metro Detroit FAQ

Do I Need to Be Based in Plymouth to Work With You?

No. I work with contractors anywhere in Michigan. Most of the work happens over calls, screen shares, and reports.

Can I Rank on Google Maps in a City Where I Don't Have an Office?

It’s harder, because distance is part of how Google ranks local results. But a complete profile, the right service area, strong reviews, and ads targeted to that city can all help you show up there. A heatmap shows exactly where you stand.

Can My Ads Target Just a Few Cities?

Yes. Google Ads can target specific cities, ZIP codes, or a radius, and Local Services Ads use the service area you set. I’ll match them to where you actually want work.
