Local Services Ads Management for Michigan Contractors

Local Services Ads are the listings at the very top of Google, above the regular ads, with a business name, star rating, and a Google badge. For plumbers, HVAC companies, roofers, and tree service companies, they’re often the first thing a homeowner sees when something breaks. And you pay for leads, not clicks.

They’re also easy to get wrong. Verification stalls, the wrong job types bring in the wrong calls, missed calls quietly drag down your ranking, and bad leads go uncredited because nobody’s watching. I’m Jeff, and I set up and manage Local Services Ads for trades businesses across Metro Detroit and Michigan, so they produce booked jobs instead of headaches.

What Local Services Ads Are and How They Charge

When someone searches for a service you offer in your area, Google can show your Local Services ad at the top of the page. The homeowner can call you, message you, or, in some cases, request a booking, right from the ad.

You don’t pay per click. Google says you’re charged for each valid lead, meaning a call you answer or return and speak with the customer on, a message, a voicemail, a booking request, or a missed call during your business hours where the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds. Follow-up contact from the same customer within 15 days isn’t charged again. Google bills those leads through Google Ads, and you set a weekly budget so you never pass your monthly maximum.

Since Google’s badge change, businesses that complete verification earn the Google Verified badge, which replaced the old Google Guaranteed badge.

What's Included in Local Services Ads Management

Account Setup and Verification Help

I set up your Local Services Ads account and walk you through Google’s screening and verification step by step. Depending on your trade, that can include background checks, business registration, insurance, and license checks. I make sure your business name, license, and insurance documents match, because mismatches cause most delays.

Google Business Profile Connection

Google requires a verified Google Business Profile linked to your Local Services account. I confirm the right profile is matched and that the person completing verification has owner or manager access.

Service Areas and Job Types

I set your service area and select only the job types you want. That’s the main way to keep unwanted leads down, since Google says it no longer credits leads for “job type not serviced” or “geo not serviced”. Getting these settings right up front matters.

Budget and Bidding

I set your weekly budget and choose a bidding mode: Maximize leads, Target cost per lead, or Max per lead. Then I adjust as data comes in. Google notes it takes about 2 weeks for bidding to settle as the system learns.

Profile Quality and Reviews

Google says Local Services ranking factors in your bid, how responsive you are, and your profile quality, including rating, number of reviews, response time, photos, and completed verifications. I build out your bio, photos, and services, and set up automated review requests so your review count keeps growing.

Lead Monitoring and Credits

I watch your lead inbox, flag leads that look like spam, wrong services, or duplicates, and use Google’s lead feedback tools. Google re-assesses charged leads and may credit low-quality ones automatically, usually within 30 days. I make sure lead feedback gets submitted, which Google says helps it send leads better suited to your business, and which can sometimes earn a bonus credit.

Responsiveness Setup

Missed calls can hurt your Local Services ranking, and a missed call during business hours can still be a charged lead. I pair Local Services Ads with missed-call text-back and instant lead replies, and help you set business hours that match when someone can actually pick up.

Monthly Reporting

Every month you get a report showing leads by type (calls, messages, bookings), what you were charged, what was credited, and which leads became jobs, as long as you mark them in the inbox.

Setup Process and Timeline

Step 1: Intro Call and Eligibility Check

We confirm your trade and service area are eligible, and go over the documents you’ll need.

Step 2: Account Creation and Profile Build

I create or take over your Local Services account, link your Google Business Profile, and set up services, job types, service area, hours, and your business bio.

Step 3: Screening and Verification

You (and in some trades, your field workers) complete Google’s checks. Google says this takes 3 to 4 weeks on average after you submit documents. I keep it moving and follow up with Google support when something stalls.

Step 4: Launch and Learning Period

Once you’re verified, your ads go live. Bidding needs about 2 weeks to settle. I watch lead quality closely in the first month.

Step 5: Ongoing Management

Weekly checks on leads, credits, budget, and responsiveness, plus a monthly report and adjustments.

How Pricing Works

There are two separate costs. Your leads are billed by Google, through Google Ads, based on your budget and bid. My management fee is separate. I don’t publish dollar amounts on the site, but I’ll give you a straight quote on a 15-minute call. More on how my pricing works.

Local Services Ads by Trade

Local Services Ads work best alongside Google Ads and an active Google Business Profile. See all four services on the services page.

Local Services Ads FAQ

Is Google Guaranteed Still a Thing?

Google has moved to a single Google Verified badge for Local Services advertisers and is ending the Money Back Guarantee that came with the Google Guaranteed badge. Existing verified advertisers move over automatically. New advertisers earn the badge by completing screening and verification.

Am I Charged for Spam or Wrong-Number Calls?

Google says it filters invalid activity like spam and duplicates and doesn’t charge for leads it decides are invalid or low quality. Charged leads are also re-assessed and may be credited automatically. If one slips through, I’ll make sure feedback is submitted.

Why Am I Getting Leads for Jobs I Don't Do?

Usually the job types or service area are set too broadly. Since Google no longer credits “job type not serviced” or “geo not serviced” leads, I tighten those settings first.

Can I Pause When I'm Too Busy?

Yes. You can pause or lower your budget. It’s usually better than letting calls go unanswered, because responsiveness is a ranking factor.

Do I Need a Website for Local Services Ads?

No. The ad links to your Local Services profile, not your website. You do need a verified Google Business Profile.

Should I Run Local Services Ads and Google Ads Together?

Often, yes. They show in different spots on the page and do different jobs. Local Services Ads are great for emergency and trust-driven calls, and Google Ads give you more control over specific services. I compare them in Local Services Ads vs. Google Ads for plumbers.
