A tree service company can spend a whole day on a small trim, or land one hazardous removal that pays for the week. The problem is that most marketing doesn’t know the difference. Generic ads and lead sites send you every “how much to cut a branch” inquiry along with the jobs you actually want: big removals, crane work, storm cleanup, and lot clearing.
I’m Jeff, founder of Campaigns That Convert in Plymouth. I help Michigan tree service companies get found on Google for the high-ticket work, with Google Ads, Local Services Ads, Google Business Profile management, and follow-up automation that keeps quotes from slipping away.
Trimming and small-job calls aren’t bad, but they don’t pay for the bucket truck, the chipper, the insurance, and the crew. If your marketing treats “tree trimming” and “large tree removal” the same, you’ll fill the schedule with low-margin work and still have room for the jobs that matter.
When a summer storm or an ice storm drops trees on roofs, cars, and driveways, the phone lights up. A week later, it’s quiet. You need to show up instantly when storm calls start, and have a plan to stay busy when they stop.
Tree service companies often drive 30 minutes or more for the right job, but Google says its local results are based mainly on relevance, distance, and prominence, and distance is the one you can’t change. A shop in one suburb can be invisible in the map pack two towns over. Google Ads and Local Services Ads let you reach the outer parts of your service area that the map pack won’t.
Big removals almost always need an estimate visit. Homeowners collect two or three quotes and then go quiet. Without a follow-up system, the job often goes to whoever checked in last.
Your Google Business Profile is the first thing I work on: the right primary and secondary categories, every service you really offer (tree removal, emergency tree removal, stump grinding, trimming and pruning, land clearing, crane service if you have it), a service area that matches where you’ll actually drive, and weekly posts with job photos. Before-and-after photos of a big removal sell better than any ad copy. A ranking heatmap shows exactly where you appear on Google Maps, so we can see how far your reach goes.
With Google Ads I build campaigns around high-value searches like “tree removal,” “emergency tree removal,” “dead tree removal,” “fallen tree on house,” and “stump grinding,” in the cities you want. I add negative keywords for low-value searches like “free firewood,” “tree trimming jobs,” and DIY how-tos. Storm campaigns sit ready to switch on when the weather turns. Every call is recorded, so we know which searches lead to the big tickets.
Local Services Ads show at the top of Google with the Google Verified badge, and you pay per lead. For tree service in the US, Google’s screening can include business and owner background checks, business registration, general liability insurance, and state-level licenses where local law requires them. In Local Services Ads you pick your job types and service area, which helps steer leads toward the work you want.
GoHighLevel automation makes sure every missed call gets a text back while you’re up in a tree, every web lead gets an instant reply, every open quote gets a scheduled follow-up, and every finished job gets a review request. Past customers get a seasonal check-in for pruning or a post-storm note.
See how these fit together on my services overview.
Google Ads management is a flat monthly fee, with ad spend billed by Google directly to you, call recording included, no setup fee, and a 3-month minimum, then month-to-month. Local Services Ads leads are also billed by Google. I don’t publish dollar amounts. I’ll quote you after a 15-minute call, once I understand your area and the jobs you want more of. I’m in Plymouth and work with tree service companies in Wayne, Oakland, and Washtenaw counties and the rest of Michigan. My Metro Detroit page explains how I handle targeting across nearby cities.
I also work with plumbers, HVAC companies, and roofers.
Honestly, distance from the searcher is one of Google’s main local ranking factors, so you can’t count on ranking everywhere. What helps: a complete profile, a realistic service area, steady reviews that mention the towns you work in, regular posts with local job photos, and pages on your website about the areas you serve. For the outer edges of your area, Google Ads and Local Services Ads do the heavy lifting.
You can cut most of them down. In Google Ads I focus keywords and ad copy on removals and add negatives for low-value searches. In Local Services Ads I set the job types you take. Your profile and website can say plainly what you specialize in. Some small jobs will always come through, and some turn into bigger work.
Have storm and emergency removal campaigns built and paused, ready to turn on. Make sure your Google Business Profile hours and services show emergency work if you do it, and set up missed-call text-back so you don’t lose calls while the crew is out.
For tree service, yes. A homeowner deciding who gets to drop a 60-foot oak next to their house wants to see that you’ve done it before. I’ll post your job photos to your Google Business Profile weekly. Just send them over.
Once you mark an estimate as sent, the system sends a short text and email follow-up on a schedule you approve, and stops as soon as the customer replies or books. You can change the wording any time.
It can be, especially for emergency and removal calls where people want someone vetted. You pay per lead rather than per click, and you choose your job types. I usually test it alongside Google Ads and compare cost per booked job before deciding how much budget each gets.
Book a 15-minute call and tell me what kind of tree work you want more of. I’ll tell you how I’d go after it. Or run the free audit first and see how far your Google Maps visibility reaches right now.
